The Laveen Elementary School District supports the importance of a child’s early years by providing a Preschool Program for children with identified special needs. Laveen Elementary School District’s Preschool program provides early intervention/special education services to 3 to 5 year old children with qualifying developmental delays in the areas of hearing, vision, speech/language, cognitive, social, motor, and/or adaptive behavior. Eligibility is determined through formal assessment procedures.
Children who attend the special needs classes qualify for special education services and have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) in effect. Preschool for children with special needs is provided at no cost to parents.
The goal of the Laveen Preschool program is to increase children’s independence through:
- providing a positive first school experience
- developing social skills with peers and adults
- developing self-control and self-confidence
- encouraging self-care skills
- developing effective communication skills
- developing small and large muscle skills
- providing developmentally appropriate learning experiences
Preschool for children with special needs is provided at no cost to parents.
A limited number of children who do not qualify for special education may also be accepted and serve as “peer models.” These children are accepted based on screening results and space availability.
Developmental preschool is offered at the Desert Meadows School, Estrella Foothills Global Academy, and Laveen School. Preschool is in session on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. There is no class on Wednesday. Developmental preschool follows a half-day schedule.
Preschool Special Needs Screening
If you live within Laveen District boundaries and are concerned that your preschool-aged child may have developmental delays, the following information may be helpful for you. As part of our efforts to locate, evaluate and serve all disabled children (Child Find), the Laveen Elementary School District Preschool offers free developmental preschool screenings by appointment.
**If you are interested in having your child screened as a possible “peer” preschool student. Students who have passed a screening and are found to have strong overall development, particularly in language and social skills, may be eligible for this tuition-based program.
The screenings are conducted at Laveen Elementary School, 4141 W. McNeil Street.
