Move On When Reading

Arizona’s Move On When Reading (MOWR) legislation is designed to provide students with evidence-based reading instruction and intervention in kindergarten through third grade. This legislation emphasizes early identification and immediate intervention for struggling readers. These students are identified through benchmark assessments and provided immediate remediation. A.R.S. § 15-701 requires that a student not be promoted from the third grade if the pupil obtains a score on the reading portion of the statewide exam that falls below the MOWR cut score established by the State Board of Education. There are exemptions to retention for a student who does not get a sufficient score on the statewide exam’s reading portion. For more information regarding Move On When Reading, visit the Arizona Department of Education’s website.

Laveen schools are committed to providing a strong core reading program and supplemental services to ensure our students are successful readers. We offer additional academic support during the school day through intervention classes, small group tutoring, and frequent progress monitoring. We also offer extended day learning opportunities through after-school tutoring and Summer School. Please contact your child’s teacher for additional information regarding reading support for our K-3 students.

The best reading support you can give your child is to read daily with him or her. A suggested 20 minutes a day is great, but more is even better. So, grab a book and read!
