Each year the district recognizes select administrators who exhibit exceptional leadership, outstanding accomplishment, and dedicated service to Laveen’s students and community. This year we are recognizing Tim Thomas, Asst. Superintendent of Human Resources; Jon Rohloff, Principal of Paseo Pointe; Kaitlin Gretkierewicz, Asst. Principal of Desert Meadows; Megan Hamburgh, Principal of Rogers Ranch; Asia Glover, Asst. Principal of Estrella Foothills; Nancy Ramirez, Director of Federal Grants; and Robert Jacobson, Director of Support Services.
Students shine at Math Olympiad
We had some outstanding 5th-8th grade students participate in the Math Olympiad competition during their gifted time at Paseo Pointe, M.C. Cash, and Estrella Foothills in May. Several students were awarded with gold and silver pins for scoring in the top 2% and top 10% in the country, and the rest of our participating students received patches for scoring in the top 11-50%. One student, Benton Abegg of Paseo Pointe, received a medallion for earning a perfect score.
Twelve Individuals Recognized as Laveen Legends
Twelve community members have been named as Laveen Legends for 2023. These individuals, nominated by our school leaders, have gone above and beyond to support our students, our staff, and our schools. Honorees were recognized at an awards dinner and presented with a Laveen Legends award. The event also raised funds for the Laveen Education Foundation.
Recipients were: Pat Whelan, Urban Farming Education; Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansari, Phoenix City Council; Tania Ruiz and Jessica Ruiz, parent volunteers from Vista del Sur; Charleen Badman, Blue Watermelon Project; Claudine Dulaney, Laveen Dance; Abbey Sanderson, Vulcan Materials; Tracey Beal, School Connect, Lee Rosenthal, Peter Piper Pizza; Jaime Reeves, parent volunteer from Estrella Foothills; Officer Steven A. Wing, Phoenix Police; Councilwoman Kesha Hodge Washington, City of Phoenix; and Taylor Perkins, Chasse Building Team.
3rd and 4th Graders join Superintendent’s Math All Stars Club
District superintendent Dr. Sprout held an assembly at each school to introduce all third and fourth-grade students to the Superintendent’s Math-All Stars Club, challenging students to spend 15 minutes a day practicing math skills.
Students who join the club will be given a Chromebook to use at home for the duration of the school year. Students will participate in the ALEKS online math program, a companion product to the district’s math curriculum. ALEKS uses adaptive tools to tailor students’ math practice to their identified needs. Dr. Sprout will appear in Google Classroom videos monthly to congratulate students and introduce the month’s challenges and monthly prizes.
Laveen Schools Recognized for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Systems
Eight Laveen schools were recognized by PBISAZ for installing and sustaining Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) systems to improve the academic and behavioral outcomes of students. All eight received the highest level of award, Level 4, which recognizes schools with fidelity at all levels. The Laveen School District has more Level 4 awards than any other district in Arizona.
Congratulations to Laveen, M.C. Cash, Vista, Cheatham, Desert Meadows, Paseo Pointe, Rogers Ranch and Estrella Foothills!
