With great sadness,  the Laveen School District announces the  passing of long-time Governing Board member and current Board Clerk, Susan Sanborn.  Since her death, Superintendent Sprout has been in contact with Susan’s family and, on their behalf, would like to share the following with the Laveen community.

Susan was born on March 25, 1942, in Pasadena, California, and passed away on February 12, 2021, just days after her husband, Jon, due to complications from COVID-19.

Susan and Jon lived in Laveen for over 15 years. Susan served on the Laveen Governing Board during most of that time and held the positions of both Board President and Clerk. You could not find a more devoted advocate for Laveen’s children and our District’s employees.

She was an Art Education Major and retired from teaching in California. She also taught in the Phoenix Elementary School District.

Susan’s passion for art led to her being involved in the Laveen Art League, where she served as Vice President. It brought her great joy to see Laveen students discover their art skills, and the League often supported after-school art clubs and annual art shows.

Susan was also actively involved in her neighborhood HOA, the Laveen Village Planning Committee, the Arizona Clay Association, and Arizona Art Education Association.

She and Jon, 84, were married for 41 years before his passing due to the same illness. Jon was her constant companion and could often be seen alongside her participating in various district events – most notably serving as Santa Claus at the District’s Winter Festival.

The Sanborns leave behind five children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

We will be remembering and honoring Susan at the March 4 Governing Board meeting.

Cards may be sent 5023 West Pedro Lane, Laveen, AZ, 85339.  Funeral services are pending.

Please join us in keeping the Sanborn family in your thoughts and prayers.
