The Laveen School District will be opening it’s ninth school in August 2020. The yet-to-be-named school, located near 55th Avenue and Carver, will open to Grades K-6. It will add a grade level each year until it serves Grades K-8. As with all Laveen schools, there is not an attendance boundary. It is a “school of choice” that any family may attend regardless of where they reside.
The Global Studies Program
School No. 9 will feature global studies as it’s signature program. This program will create opportunities for students to think and engage in learning activities that broaden their global perspective. The plans include a Mandarin Chinese foreign language component.
The program is built around the following four domains of global competence:
- Investigate the World: Students investigate the world beyond their immediate environment
- Recognize Perspectives: Students recognize their own and others’ perspectives
- Communicate Ideas: Students communicate their ideas effectively with diverse audiences
- Take Action: Students translate their ideas into appropriate action to improve conditions
Each grade level will focus on a specific global theme. Possible themes include:
- Global Kindness
- Health & Wellness
- Water Use & Conservation
- Human Rights
- Global Marketing
The program is modeled after the Asia Society’s Global School Design, which ensures all aspects of the school community are designed to support a global focus.
